layers, yes...

Post by catgarza »

i try to work in layers as much as possible, but sometimes i'll draw something and THEN realize i need the character seperate from the background. still, with the cloning of layers, this is easy. in this particular instance, yes, the drawing was scanned in and then i cut the foreground and background apart. sometimes i actually plan it right and can get both seperately drawn and scanned FIRST, then put together in photoshop (there was a lot of that going on in WHIMVILLE, for instance).

replacing the cigarette butt with the bong was a nice addition, although the pipe he's smokin' is my favorite glass piece... ;) i colored it brown so that the Austin American Statesman could run the panel in the print version of the webstrip that comic panel comes from, hoping they wouldn't question it. if i'd been more "realistic" the pipe would have been swirly blue, red, and aqua...

I had a fleeting thought of why is there a cigarette but on the floor, but he is smoking a pipe. If I had more forethought I wold have put the bong in his hands.

I used to do my comic in pieces too and then set them up in flash. But that got to be a bother when thing wouldn?t align and the composition didn?t work when put together. Then I had to go back and re-draw. So I stopped doing it that way and just started drawing the whole panel. As I write I had a brain storm. My drawing table is a light box. I could do the pencils as one panel then ink the pieces separately as need with the use of my light box. Every once in a while I get a case of the smarts.

I did the cat panel as one. Then in photoshop I made a duplicate layer of the scan. Then I erased the background in one then the foreground in the other. Made both in multiply then made new layers under each for color. Then I made the background b+w in 60% transparency to knock the black down then merged it with the color layer. Then I added the guassian blur to that layer. Phhew, too much work for me. I need to work on my b+w. I think I do too much with levels then it gets choppy.

Maybe we should hit up a few more message boards and forums...

But according to the member list, there's a lot of good online cartoonists lurking around here!

Of course, it's only available without restraint to the strip writers. The readers are just as restrained as always.

The Sin of Side Scrolling

Post by Alexander D. »

Now that is really funny! Man, do I hate side scrolling. And yet, so many really good comics just wouldn't be paced right without it. If only I had a mouse with a second scroll wheel, I suppose I wouldn't mind so much...
